REVIEW: Karkaos – Children Of The Void

REVIEW: Karkaos – Children Of The Void by Carina Lawrence / Dark Art Conspiracy

Melodic extreme metal act Karkaos from Canada formed in 2003 and quickly built a formidable presence in their home country following their successful 2011 EP ‘In Burning Skies’ and then in 2014 they unleashed their full-length debut ‘Empire’ to help solidify this further. Now they return with their new, to be self-released album ‘Children Of The Void’ which features a new and unstoppable line-up with vocalist Viky Boyer and drummer Justine Ethier at the helm. To add more power to this anticipated release they enlist some guest musicians in the form of Lindsay Schoolcraft from Cradle of Filth and Morgan Lander from Kittie.

Opening intro track ‘Babel’ is very atmospheric and dramatic, building suspense with a determination and glimmer of hope that increases as it draws to an end, making it the perfect way to gear you up for what is to unfold…

‘Skymaster’ explodes to life with a massive symphonic sound, blitzing guitars and fast drums, with Viky Boyer’s compelling and impressive vocals fitting the relentless instrumentation and the contrasting fierce vocals from guitarist, Vincent Harnois wonderfully. This is overwhelming but in a brilliant, huge and all-consuming way.

First single ‘Kolossòs’ is crushing from the off, with a haunting intensity aided especially by the vocal delivery and keys. This is indeed colossal in every way, and it helps that it features immense guest vocals from Morgan Lander of Canadian metallers Kittie. This is an unstoppable and divine offering that encapsulates the album and the band’s sound.

Title track ‘Children Of The Void’ is immediately ambient and features many tempo changes, but never loses its fluency. The charging verses are intense and the whole song shifts between beautiful twists and turns, and enthrals with slick and impressive guitar as seen throughout the album, the nature and the vibe of the song feels very unified.

‘Tyrants’ blasts into action with alarming symphonic sounds and growled vocals. Again the band play to their strengths hitting you from every direction and overloading you, with clean, brutal, sinister hushed tones and gang vocals adding, even more depth which the album is simply brimming with.

The final offering ‘Bound By Stars’ is beautiful and eerie with passionate heartfelt lyrics from Viky. It is the longest song in length, giving it an epic feel through strength and duration, as well as the ever melodic resonant tones and soaring solo guitar work from Samael Pelletier that he exhibits throughout.

This is a fantastic attack on the senses, which is captivating, exhilarating, suspenseful, yet brutal. It is excellently structured and features impressive musicianship from the whole band. There is such depth and intelligence, through intricate fine details, that it most certainly need to be stuck on repeat to help process and appreciate every moment. This is massively majestic and leaves a lasting impression and asserts that Karkaos are a band to watch out for.

SCORE: 5/5

‘Children Of The Void’ is self-released on 26th May 2017.

LACUNA COIL – release video for “You Love Me ‘Cause I Hate You”

After launching a video clip for the song “Blood, Tears, Dust” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9sVUqOhcPU) LACUNA COIL are revealing the full story of their two conceptual videos with their latest clip for the song “You Love Me ‘Cause I Hate You”. Like “Blood, Tears, Dust” the video was directed and edited by Cosimo Alemà and produced by the production company Borotalco.

Check out “You Love Me ‘Cause I Hate You” under the following link:

Cristina Scabbia (vocals): “The videos we shot with Cosimo Alemà are exactly what we wanted to deliver visually, especially if connected with a record like ’Delirium’. The darkness, the intensity, the script itself are taking the viewer to the dimension we wanted to be transported to. ‘You Love Me ‘Cause I Hate You’ and ‘Blood, Tears, Dust’ are tightened together in a twisted story that I like a lot as there is so much that can be defined with each one’s imagination. Interpreting different characters was also exciting, an interesting challenge I hadn’t faced until then. I hope the viewers can capture the magic we breathed while we shot them.”

Andrea Ferro (vocals): “Every age has its form of storytelling, and video clips have been a huge part of our culture. Talking with Cosimo (Alemà/director) and our label we decided to create something to bring back the artistic quality video clips used to have. We put our love for cinema into our video for the song ‘You Love Me ‘Cause I Hate You’, as you will see there is a clear inspiration from TV series like ‘True Detective’ and also a certain ‘Twin Peaks’/’Resident Evil’ vibe. We wanted the viewers to contemplate the story and question what it really means. There is also a tight connection with the previous video for the song ‘Blood, Tears, Dust’ as both clips should be considered almost as one single piece. The videos clearly explore the main theme of our latest album, ‘Delirium’, and all its madness and symbols. It’s been a really great and challenging experience to be on the set for several days and work in ‘cinema style’ for the very first time to create something completely new for LACUNA COIL.”

Both songs are taken from LACUNA COIL’s latest album: Fresh, dark and extremely powerful are only a few of the best ways to accurately describe “Delirium”, which encompasses the strength and heavy approach of thrash metal from the 90’s twisted with goth elements into a modern style. The band hasn’t finished their extensive touring cycle, so catch LACUNA COIL live at one of the following shows and festivals:

FOSCOR release video for third new track

FOSCOR are premiering a new video for the next song taken from their forthcoming fifth full-length, ‘Les Irreals Visions’, which has been slated for release on June 9th.

FOSCOR comment: “Memory is an important element within this album; an extension of human experience on inhabiting the world. A net of places, ways, wefts, and bounds shapes our daily experience and builds our life at many different levels. To feel its beauty, it is mandatory to inhabit this space, embrace it and live it with the body and memories accumulated over time and experimentation. There is an important sentence within the lyrics of this song that claims ‘… At the margins of the road, big altars stand up…’, which develops the idea that when we are taken to our personal limits, a door to a new reality may appear. Following the topic on ‘Instants’, the altars are a metaphor of those moments of change. We are no longer what we were; we are images of ourselves – and a reinvention for better or worse.

This is a new video experience developed alongside the team we are used to work with. Again, there is a lot of us in the process of making this video, emotionally and physically, as well as from the people we trust and allows us to achieve the best results. We hope you enjoy and feel this journey as much as we did… ”

ORIGIN detail new album “Unparalleled Universe” and premiere first single “Accident And Error” (360 degree lyric video)

unnamed (11)

The vaunted U.S. titans of extreme death metal, ORIGIN, have revealed details surrounding their forthcoming new album, “Unparalleled Universe”, set to be released on June 30th via Agonia Records (Europe / ROW) and Nuclear Blast Records (North America). Pre-orders for the album are available below. Listen to the first single “Accident And Error” in the form of a 360 degree lyric video at this link:

For 20 years, ORIGIN has engaged a full-blown sensory assault of tight, taut, and technical death metal amplified by flashes of grindcore and groove. However, 2017’s “Unparalleled Universe” sees the quartet – Paul Ryan (guitar, vocals), John Longstreth (drums), Mike Flores (bass, vocals), and Jason Keyser (vocals) – strengthen that blueprint with a handful of surprises.

“It feels like an Origin album, but it’s unparalleled to what you might expect if you haven’t heard us for 10 or 15 years” says Ryan. “To me, it’s a true reflection of ourselves. I compare it to an action movie. Our earlier material is filled with action from beginning to end. Now, the idea is to add a little more depth and dynamics. You could say there are some twists in the plot musically”.

ORIGIN began compiling ideas for what would become “Unparalleled Universe” while touring in support of their 2014 sixth offering, “Omnipresent”. Along the way, the record snatched their highest position on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart, bowing in the Top 10. Meanwhile, it garnered acclaim from metal press and successful tours with everyone from Aborted and Exhumed to Immolation and Marduk over the last three years. They’ve also shined on the Summer Slaughter Tour in 2009 & 2014. On the road with Belphegor last year, the members debuted a skeleton of the first single “Accident and Error” in front of packed crowds.

“We would ask the audience to give us title ideas, but we could never discern what they were actually saying” laughs Ryan. “Riffs typically start on tour, and I keep them in my back pocket. That’s the way it is. Ultimately, Unparalleled Universe begins another era for Origin. In the end, we’re still writing death metal songs, but we’re adding new dimensions. We’re still Origin”.
