The Tangent launch new track ‘Slow Rust’ – taken from forthcoming new album

The Tangent, the progressive rock group led by Andy Tillison, recently announced the release of their first new music since 2015. Their new ninth studio album ‘The Slow Rust of Forgotten Machinery’ is set for release on 21st July 2017

and today sees the release of an edit of the track ‘Slow Rust’ which you can listen to here:

Andy comments: “The song ‘Slow Rust’ is a long involved piece that looks at the whole massive set of implications of the various refugee crises around the world today.  The piece tries to take on many of the points of view from different groups like The Press, Politicians, Industry, Education and all of US – but just for this section of the song we turned the camera on the people actually in the middle of this story, desperate people doing desperate things in a world that has little time to help them.

‘The Actual Story’ is a small section of this massive piece – a subsection of it. Marie Eve de Gaultier’s voice becomes the leading instrument here in a rare Tangent acoustic section and is one of the highlights of the album as a whole, part of one of the band’s most complex ever songs both in musical construction and lyrical development. The piece is challenging, dynamic and ‘of its time’.”

A series of track-by-track interviews featuring Andy Tillison and Luke Machin discussing the album in detail were recently launched, and you can watch the latest one here:

Listen to previously released track ‘Two Rope Swings’ here:

The line-up for this album once again features Tillison on keyboards, vocals (and for the first time on a Tangent record – drums), Jonas Reingold on bass, Luke Machin on guitars and vocals, and Theo Travis on sax and flutes plus new member Marie-Eve de Gaultier on keys and vocals. There are also guest appearances from author/playwright and Chumbawamba founder Boff Whalley on vocals, and upcoming DJ/producer Matt Farrow.

The album sees The Tangent in political commentary mode once again – this time often focussing on the horrendous plight of refugees from war torn parts of the world – and the way in which they are treated by the West, and in particular by the tabloid press. The album laments the new trend in building walls and defending borders across the world yet takes time to look at the breakup of friendships and other more personal issues – along with a song about the fate of wildlife in the modern consumer world.

And it’s a Progressive Rock Record. Full of intricacies, long developed pieces, challenging arrangements and virtuoso playing from all members. New sounds and styles (the band have brought a DJ on board for some sections) – new voices and techniques (first female vocals in The Tangent since the “Not As Good As The Book” album 10 years ago). A new producer in the form of Luke Machin whose open and deep/clear sound is a major factor of this album, a new drummer in the form of Andy Tillison who decided at long last (after drumming for 30 years) to let his own performances guide the rest of the band rather than adding another musician later. And after 13 years of asking, Jonas finally agreed to play some double bass in a song where Luke also plays some Scat guitar and Andy does a full on drum solo.

“The Slow Rust Of Forgotten Machinery” also features stellar artwork from Marvel / DC Comics artist Mark Buckingham. The sleeve of the album is totally based on the music it contains and was especially created for this project.

Shock Rockers SALEMS LOTT Reveal Anime-Style Music Video for Dystopian Track, “Enigma”

Hollywood-based shock rock frontrunners SALEMS LOTT have been making a name for themselves on the Sunset Strip since their inception in 2013, selling out venues such as House of Blues, The Whisky A Go Go, The Roxy and Viper Room countless times. Performing a heavy speed metal sound mixed with shocking theatrics and an even more surprising look, the band have amassed fans from here to Japan with their antics and sound.
With the recent release of part one of their new two-part album series, Mask Of Morality, the band delved into socially-conscious themes on individualism, values, morality and current politics. One of the more eye-opening tracks on the album, entitled “Enigma”, focuses on freedom of speech on both sides of the societal coin.
SALEMS LOTT have just revealed their brand new music video for “Enigma” via Alternative Press. Directed by Ian Moore and produced by UWOWI, the video features custom anime-style animation depicting the band in a dystopian society whose people are on-the-verge of battle with one another. The battle stems from the dissolving of individualism and a hyper-focus on equality. Watch here:

Lead guitarist Jett Black says, “The anime portion portrays a hypothetical fictional future in which the ideology of equality attains complete dominance. Wealth, prosperity, individualism are ostracized and violently subdued. Conversely, equality and collectivism are promoted to its utter extreme. These two opposing views inevitably battle it out. Throughout the video the band symbolizes the lost archetype of yang – order – the father and all of the archetypal elements embodied. In contrast, the authoritative figures of the future and the violent activists of the modern day, embody the extreme archetype of yin – chaos – the overbearing mother.”
Black adds, “Freedom of speech is the mechanism in which a healthy society remains balanced and not swayed by either extreme.  In the video, we see the signs of an unbalanced extreme being pushed forward through violent suppression of free speech (opposing views). This is something we are seeing today more commonly and would ultimately lead to a Marxist ‘utopian’ future as the one depicted in the anime. Hence the title “Enigma” (other than censorship reasons): The nature of an ideology that is deeply damaging/authoritative but masquerades under the innocent good intentioned guise of compassion (while any opposing view is vilified), which makes it so mysterious, ambiguous and hard to identify as the problem. The shadowy figure silencing individuals through force and its extended intimidation.”

As previously mentioned, Mask Of Morality is part one of a two-part album series, the latter of which will be released soon.

Anneke van Giersbergen’s VUUR release first track of debut album

In 2016 renowned Dutch vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen announced the formation of a brand new progressive metal group under the name of VUUR. The band debuts ‘Days Go By – London’ with an album track video and digital release. This song is the first track taken from VUUR’s debut album, which has yet to be named, due in the fall of this year.
Anneke comments: “The lyrical content of the album is inspired by the many cities I have visited while being on the road. The song ‘Days Go By – London’ is about The Great Fire in 1666. The lyrics are written from the perspective of the element of Fire, threatening Londoners to wipe them out, but the song is also about hope. Even in the darkest of times, the sun will rise.”
