Graspop Metal Meeting started off as wet as a tropical rainforest but that did absolutely nothing to dampen the spirits of the metal hordes. Four days later, as the 27th edition of Belgium’s premier metal festival draws to a close, it’s safe to say it’s been yet another extremely successful four days. Heads were banged, mosh pits exploded, kindred metal spirits came together and most of all: a torrent of memorable performances sent the metal faithful into rapture.
As was the case with recent editions, GMM2024 was completely sold out and the weather-beaten arena welcomed some 55,000 music enthusiasts per day as they soaked up both familiar classics and up-and-coming talent. Household names like Judas Priest, Scorpions, Alice Cooper and Deep Purple know the lay of the land in Dessel but like every year, the festival paid particular attention to the next generation of metal heroes. Polyphia, Slaughter to Prevail and Wargasm were just a few of the acts to make their Graspop debut this year.
Our homegrown bands delivered standout performances. Stake dropped by to celebrate their 20th anniversary on the huge South Stage. It was a particularly emotional occasion as guitarist Cis Deman will be leaving the band shortly to chase his American Dream. Brutus’s Graspop hazing challenged the tensile strength of a chock-full Metal Dome as the band met with a triumphant reception.
Honourable mention goes to Tool’s first GMM gig. The American prog metallers closed out the first festival day in grand style with a musical and visual display that dropped jaws across the festival arena. Metalcore sensations Bring Me The Horizon added a fourth notch to their GMM belt. Saturday marked their first headlining slot here and the Sheffield natives repaid that confidence in spades. They sent the Graspoppers off to bed – or to their inflatable mattress – with a blissful smile.

Taking the world by surprise with its debut during the opening night of GHOST’s first ever feature film RITE HERE RITE NOW, the never-before-heard “The Future is a Foreign Land” is cause for celebration amongst the millions of fans of GHOST’s legendary 1969 era. Long thought lost to the sands of time, “Future…” is the third song from the GRAMMY-winning Swedish theatrical rock icons’ timeless 1969 sessions featuring Papa Nihil fronting an early incarnation of the band — the same lineup that blessed us with the now-classic Seven Inches of Satanic Panic single. That single’s pair of GHOST swinging sixties staples — “Kiss the Go-Goat” and the RIAA-certified platinum Tik Tok phenomenon and Billboard Hot 100 breakthrough “Mary on a Cross” — has become an unholy trinity with the unearthing of “The Future is a Foreign Land.” While its wicked twangy guitar figures and portentous lyrics of an impending 1984 render the song instantly recognizable as an artifact of the era, “Future…” is suffused with presciently modern signatures of the contemporary GHOST sound. Ending with an optimistic nod to 2024, “Future…” was revealed to the children of the world during the end credits of RITE HERE RITE NOW‘s world premiere, and is the sole previously unreleased studio track to be included on the movie’s original soundtrack.

Download Festival –LIVE REVIEW by Carina Lawrence / Dark Art Conspiracy
Download Festival 2024 marked the 7th one I have been to. Still, for the first time, I arrived on Wednesday the 12th of June, two days before the arena and main music started, as I usually would arrive very early on the first day of the arena opening. It was nice to experience the other festival activities on Wednesday and Thursday, the 13th of June, such as chilli eating contests, axe and paddle bushcraft demonstrations and some bands playing in the Doghouse. I especially enjoyed seeing Bleed Again from Brighton, a local band I am very familiar with and was proud to see them crushing it, headlining the Takeover Stage with a good turnout. There was also lots of comedy, including on Thursday with Andrew O’Neill’s History Of Heavy Metal sketch, which was a highlight pre-main festival, which was entertaining and took you through the milestones of metal with Andrew playing the heavy hitters on guitar and adding some funny quips in the mix to a packed tent. The two days before the arena opened was also lovely weather, perfect for sitting around in camp, enjoying a few drinks, and enjoying the atmosphere; it’s just a shame that the weather took a turn for the worst on Friday, 14th June, just in time for the main event!
