REVIEW: Emptybrook – Self titled EP

REVIEW: Emptybrook – Self titled EP                                                                                              by Carina lawrence / Dark Art Conspiracy

Emptybrook are a sludge metal act from Finland who formed in 2015. They are inspired by Finnish low budget movies from the 1970’s and 80’s and the short summers in their home country. They inject an organic and raw sound into their sound and showcase this in their debut self-titled EP…

Opener ‘Repeat’ pulls you in with bouncy groovy tuneful riffs, accompanied by crashing drums, and belligerent vocals that are short and make a high impact. This is a hard hitting and surprisingly melodic introduction to the band…

The brilliant comically titled, ‘The Grand King Of Fuckery’ is heavy as hell, with its stomping sludge sounds offering a complimentary backdrop to the evil harsh vocals – this will surely have you head banging and will be a great extreme live anthem.

‘A Song For The End Of Days’ features drawn out sinister guitars, and sounds like something serious is going down. This is the most beastly song so far with vocalist, Ollijuhani sounding very pissed off and fed up. This has a slower pace, driven by a heavy rhythm that is almost chilled out, in contrast to the full on vocals, and finishes on some nice ambient guitar work, making it memorable.

The winner for funniest titled song goes to ‘Smoking Weed With Numbskull Emptybrook’ poking fun at themselves, and not being too serious lyrically. Initially they look to cause your ears distress with a high pitched alarming sound, before it batters you with its heavy sludge weight. It turns out to be rather upbeat sounding musically for this genre, due to its tone and fast pace, giving it a lighter vibe in this short offering.

Closing song, ‘Hit The Wall Or Hit The Ground’ takes things down a notch, before picking up to deliver a pummelling final blow to end this debut EP.

This is a solid and rather enjoyable EP, the band should be proud of their inception, especially with them getting the right balance of humour, seriousness and melodies to soften the harshness of the genre, making it must hear for sludge metal fans.

Score: 3.5 / 5

Emptybrook’s Self-titled debut cassette/digital release is released on April 17th 2017.

Charm Designer released a new music video for Never After!

Colombian doom-gothic metal 4-piece Charm Designer released their first music video “Never After” on Friday, April 7th, 2017 through Inverse RecordsYouTube channel and the band’s own Facebook page.

The clip for Never After was shot in their hometown by local director Gustavo Carvajal, and it portrays both the concept of a multiple characterization of mortality and Gustavo’s bet on a “fashion film” inspired visual aesthetics and the interplay of light and shade.

Never After is the second single from Charm Designer’s 2016 album “Everlasting”, which was produced and recorded by Waldemar Sorychta (Tiamat, Samael, Moonspell, Lacuna Coil, etc.). Previously and as anticipation for the album, a lyric video for the title track, which featured the artwork and animation of renowned Romanian artist Costin Chioreanu, was released as a first single.

Everlasting was first released by Finland’s Inverse Records on CD and also for download and streaming through digital platforms.

Enragement sacrifice blood for the sun god in their new music video!

Finnish extreme death metal band Enragement and Inverse Records have made a record deal concerning their second album named “Burned, Barren, Bloodstained“. The album is released June 9th 2017.

A single “Blood for the Sun God” was released today and it can be seen on Youtube

and listened to in Spotify https://open.spotify.com/album/5L7wwF1bM4Eo97GwzhqU5J It is an excellent foretaste of what’s to come.

Since their debut full-length, 2014’s ”Omnimalevolence of Man”, Enragement has taken ever further leaps into the darkness. Honing skills, technique and atmosphere, and above all, their myriad visions of evil, the band’s new opus “Burned, Barren, Bloodstained” paints the bands most abysmal portrait of man to date.

Enragement presents a unique blend of three equal-footed growlers adding twisted nuances into the sea of brutality, to seamlessly highlight each step of their disgusting stories. No sound, no idea is beyond Enragement’s quest to create the ultimate song to capture the human condition at its darkest. This is Extreme Death Metal, this is Enragement!

Justice Theory released new single “Welcome The The Family”

Finnish thrash metal band Justice Theory has released a new single!

Their third single ”Welcome To The Family” is released today March 26th 2017. Valtteri came up with lyrics that/which fitted perfectly to an energetic spirit of the song. Idea for lyrics came from that raw aggressiveness and speedy going, which eventually got the band decide that this would definitely be their next single to release. More specifically, the lyrics tell about a person/ a guy/ citizen, who has had enough of this world shackled by foolish standards and limitations. He builds a family of rebels which starts to riot against the world of restrictive rules.

A comment from Valtteri :

In the beginning we decided that our next single is going to be cheery, high-powered track. We took few steps back from massiveness and melodiousness that our previous single “Unbroken” was all about. Welcome To The Family is highly inspired by our first single “Necessary Evil” and also has the vibes that Anthrax were been able to bring in their songs – Not too seriously, but convincingly. I think that we managed to get what we wanted in this song, and I’m quite sure that it will be one of the highlights on our upcoming shows. IT ROCKS!

This song is dedicated to our dearest friends and fans, who are supported and believed in us from the very beginning. We are more than happy to see that you guys are out there! So huge thank you all!

Finnish metal group Noumena releases new album “Myrrys” in April, new song out now

Finnish metal group Noumena will release their fifth studio album ”Myrrys” on the 28th of April. The album is a strong follower to Noumena’s previous album ”Death Walks With Me” released four years ago.

As an appetizer, Noumena serves a single track “Metsän viha” in digital services and as a lyric video in YouTube:

Metsän viha is an upbeat opening track of the album, which is a great choice as a single as well.  The song combines catchy melodies, badass riffs, overwhelming drumming and Andy’s and Suvi’s merciless growls. Lyrics deal with the humanity’s ability to destroy everything vital and dear, comments guitarist Tuukka Tuomela, who has composed the song.

Listen Metsän viha on Spotify

The album is an eloquent combination of 90’s style melodic death metal and melancholic Finnish mollie tunes. The album is mixed and mastered by the metal visionary Dan Swanö, who has ensured wide and dynamic sounds. “Myrrys” offers a musical journey all the way from catchy upbeat moments to sturdy and desolate emotions.

With melodies, riffs, sounds and lyrics, “Myrrys” paints a picture of a mindscape filled with contradictions and Northern despair. The album title “Myrrys” (old Finnish) refers to ruckus, tumult or uproar. So far, Noumena has sticked to English as lyrical language, but the album themes, including Finnish nature and cultural heritage, and intimate stories required the use of Finnish. Every band member has contributed to songwriting, and the formidable cover art is crafted by Finnish young talent Otto Lehtonen.

“Myrrys” is Noumena’s second album with vocalist Suvi Uura, who contrasts and balances skillfully Antti Haapanen’s growls with her deep voice. Uura joined Noumena in 2009 and the rest of the band are original members in the band turning 20 years in 2018.

On the album release day (28.04.2017) Noumena will also release their next official music video directed by Jyrki Murtomäki.

“Myrrys” is released by Haunted Zoo Productions, which is an independent record label established by Noumena members. Distribution by Playground Music and Inverse Records. Released in Russia by FONO under the license from Haunted Zoo Productions. Album is released in CD/LP/DIGI.
