Sorrow Plagues Unleash New Video ‘Relinquish’ & Reveal Album Launch Show Details

Sorrow Plagues Unleash New Video ‘Relinquish’ & Reveal Album Launch Show Details

Sorrow Plagues have released a new music video for the song ‘Relinquish’ which is the first single from the forthcoming sophomore album ‘Homecoming’ out May 27th.

Sorrow Plagues, is the Brainchild of British musician David Lovejoy. The new album ‘Homecoming’ ventures into new territory with added elements of post-rock, and even including some contemporary influences, whilst still maintaining the atmospheric Black Metal sounds that Sorrow Plagues is known for. This is David Lovejoy’s most ambitious effort so far.

Lovejoy talks about the meaning of the song: “The song is about the importance of living in the present moment and realising that being stuck in the past and worrying about the future is the cause of a lot of our problems. I got the idea for writing lyrics on the topic whilst reading “A New Earth” by Eckhart Tolle.”

Check out the video for ‘Relinquish’ below:

The video was filmed by Luke Bateman.

Lovejoy on the release show, “I’m very excited about releasing the album at Bar 42, it’s a venue I’ve loved going to for years and playing shows there has given me plenty of experience in previous bands.”

Six months ago the Green Door Store was one of the venues to host the triumphant Mammothfest 2016 which included headliners Venom Inc, Textures and Conan and now Brighton metal heads gathered again here, for the first all day ‘Mammothfest Presents’ show of 2017, with headliners Feed The Rhino. The band were set to appear at the festival back in 2015 but were unable to, so to make it up to fans they had the honour of headlining the first of many Mammothfest events that are set to occur throughout the year, gearing up to the main festival taking place October 6-8th 2017.

The first band to kick things off were a very last minute replacement. An alternative grunge rock act from Weymouth called Tension Head – but what a welcome addition. They had a great groovy grunge sound, and marked a very different sound to what Mammothfest audiences are used to, being more accessible and mainstream, but it went down a treat with everyone dancing along. Even though the day was young as it was only 2pm the turnout was surprisingly good…

Next to take to the stage and in stark contrast to the opener was death metallers, End Of Salvation who churned out their very mosh worthy hardcore evil sounds. They also tried to start a new trend across the music scene by introducing a move for whose one are holding a beer in their hand, so that everyone can participate in some way. The audience tested this out and it provided some perfect comical material that made their set even more memorable.

Local Brighton band Hawka kept the energy going and with it brought more crowd participation, with frontman Rich jumping off stage and going to the entrance to entice more people in to witness their massive and crushing sound, inspired by the likes of heavyweights Parkway Drive, Machine Head, Korn and more.

Crazy Kickfist with said barrel mentioned below!

One of the best sets came from interesting infused nu-metal/industrial punk-core act Kickfist who intrigued the masses with their unique metal and unrelenting sounds, including their unusual but great cover of Prodigy’s popular ‘Firestarter’. Lead by frontman, Zakk Zander who sported a black mask and a baseball bat, the crowds were enthralled and their industrial Slipknot-esque grooves saw the room head banging aplenty and move as one, as their sound commanded it. Near the end of their set Zakk whacked the bat against a barrel to add to their madness so aggressively that he broke it, making for an unforgettable performance.

At the point when As Flames Rise came on, it was still considered quite early at 5pm and I don’t think the band were prepared for the carnage that unfolded and by such a humbling crowd reaction, playing their energetic melodic metal to a packed room now. Here is where some of the progressing circle pit action started to emerge, goaded by their hard hitting dual vocals and fast paced brutal guitars.

Core of iO mixed things up, being one of the first tech metal acts to grace the stage, with a hard heavy rock twist to stand out even further. They showered us with technical dynamic and intelligible sounds, and really showed off their impressive craftsmanship. To keep things well balanced vocalist/guitarist, Bob Tett injected some light hearted humour, commanding the stage even when not playing any music.

Technical melodic metal act The Five Hundred made a mighty return to Mammothfest audiences after opening the festival last year, supporting Textures. As before they got straight to the point, immediately asserting themselves with a very commanding stage presence and sound which was crushing, especially aided by evil demonic vocals from John Eley that soared and punished your eardrums. The crowd were very responsive, particularly during their well-known offering ‘Winters’, as well as treating us to an instant fan favourite with new song, ‘The Rush’ taken from their upcoming EP, ‘The Veil’.

Seething Akira’s Mental Set captivated!

The biggest surprise and moment of the night came from electronic dub hard rock heroes, Seething Akira who managed to take crowd participation and energy to a whole new level. They brought the party with their massive mental dance sounds, with the crowd going absolutely wild, with impressive pits forming. It was a non-stop spectacle that had to be seen to be believed. Inspired by the mental antics, frontman Kit Cuntrad threw himself into the crowd, in what was one of the most memorable and thrilling moments of the day, with the crowd proudly holding him high. Everyone in the room was jumping, moshing or bouncing, not a single soul was stood still, a sign that they simple destroyed it. This is a band you need to witness live.

Another anticipated and triumphant return back to Mammothfest was from Bleed Again, a fresh modern metal act from the South Coast. The band delivered one of the most energetic and unrelenting sets of 2016, coming close to upstaging bigger acts. This time round they caused quite a commotion yet again with their massive melodic metal, forcing the crowd to jump and shout along during their entire set, living up to their expectations. They were missing their bass player but luckily had Seething Akira bassist, Richard Speaight to fill in. Unfortunately because of this they didn’t play some of their most dominating songs such as ‘Walk Through The Fire’ and ‘Through My Eyes’, but they did play many a crowd pleaser with songs taken from their upcoming debut album, ‘Momentum’, such as ‘Drowning In Dreams’ and latest song, ‘Decimate’. They end on a belter with ‘Icarus’ which the crowds knew and shouted in unison.

Magna Carta – masters of the metal party anthems!

An explosive set came from Brighton based Metal/Drum ‘n’ Bass crossover act, Magna Carta who evolved from Collisions. Merging new members of other bands to bring their formidable new line-up, with James Hayball (ex Terrathorn) and Steve Dickson (the masked man in Meta-stasis as well as the man behind Mammothfest!). They opened up the dancefloor of metal madness, with endless pits and bouncing unity that left the whole room with an electrifying atmosphere. The perfect main support to get the crowds ready for the monstrous headliners…

Ajit Feed The Rino.jpgPhoto by Ajit Dutta

Headliners Feed The Rhino had the crowd on their knees!

When Feed The Rhino took to the stage, the rammed room suggested the crowd were eager and hungry for Rhino! From start to finish they didn’t let up, offering an hour of craziness and endless energy. Lead singer, Lee Tobin couldn’t contain himself, as he darted around the room and off the stage to get up close and personal with the fans. The band clearly were admired by the fans who awaited their return, and the band themselves revelled being at the forefront of this event, keeping their promise to play following their cancellation in 2015, and making it up to everyone beyond expectations. They delivered a brilliant headliner set and ended the day on an extremely intense yet insanely fun note.

This was a very successful start to the Mammothfest shows. For an all dayer the crowd were energetic and dedicated throughout, even early on in the day, highlighting the importance of such events and how strong the music scene is in Brighton. The atmosphere from the bands and the crowd was amazing, with everyone enjoying themselves and having a blast, especially aided by the newly launched debut of the Mammothfest cider, with the unveiling going down a treat, another proud moment and success the team can add to their list! Mammothfest is thriving and I’m sure the word will spread of the carnage and joy that was witnessed here and will continue at the upcoming shows.

REVIEW: Seething Akira – Backlash (Single)

Alternative hard rock ravers Seething Akira from Portsmouth, UK have unleashed their first massive anthemic single ‘Backlash’ featuring vocals from Olly Simmons of The Quemists, taken from their anticipated debut album out June 2017. The song is bold and full of angst with great lyrics like, “My blood vessels burst as I scream and curse, what have we become? What have we all done! This is my backlash!” it’s lyrics like this that help make it a live hit. It is addictive and infectiously catchy, aided by their strong and well executed use of electronic synths. I had the unforgettable experience of seeing them recently perform ‘Backlash’ live, and it was the perfect singalong party anthem, that got the crowd going wild. They are a band that need to be seen to be believed, especially in the live environment, where they truly thrive, being in their element. It’s no surprise that they have already supported the likes of Skindred, Hacktivist and Don Broco. With this hit single and their awaited debut on the way, Seething Akira look to cause a big commotion in 2017.

Score: 4/5

REVIEW: Tethra – Like Crows For The Earth

REVIEW: Tethra – Like Crows For The Earth                                                                            by Carina Lawrence / Dark Art Conspiracy

tethraband.jpg

Italian doom metal act Tethra formed in 2008 and released their first full length debut ‘Drown Into The Sea’ in 2013, which was a concept album focused on water and continued the theme started on their first EP ‘At The Gates Of Doom’, about a passage between life and death. Now in 2017 they are back with their sophomore full length ‘Like Crows For The Earth’, which was recorded and mixed by Matt Stancioiu (Labyrinth) and mastered by Greg Chandles (Esoteric). They are ready to take their sound to the next level and show how they have evolved since their debut…

The intro ‘Resilience’ is positive yet sorrowful and sets the scene wonderfully for what is to come, being very melodic and tempting, leaving you eager to hear more. It paves the way for first full track, ‘Transcending Thanatos’ which picks up where it left off before frontman, Clode Tethra demonstrates his versatile vocals, from dark growls to melodic charismatic clean vocals, which is quite alluring and stands out in the doom genre, with an gothic vibe shining through. The instrumentation accompanies the tones brilliantly, from dark gloomy moments to hopeful acoustic sections.

Instrumental ‘Prelude to Sadness’ helps create the desired atmosphere and offers a break in between songs and sees us arrive at, ‘Springtime Melancholy’ which is extremely ambient and rather beautiful, with Clode using his vocals well against the vibrant instruments. There is a great balance of dark and light, which is intelligently structured and makes a high impact, going from serene to head banging worthy moments, as well as a full blown doom rage thrown in to keep you on your toes. This is a stand out track, and a great unconventional soundtrack or anthem for Spring.

‘Deserted’ introduces a more exotic sound initially, which goes into dark sounding sonic riffs which drive it, and offer plenty of hard hitting rhythms throughout. This may well be one of the heaviest songs featured so far, as it contains more screamed growls, alongside the signature gothic doom vocals. The stripped back interlude ‘Subterranean’ is well placed and is easily Clode’s best vocal performance, with elegant acoustic guitar as backup, giving it a sinister but flourishing sound. ‘The Groundfeeder’ focuses on the heavier side, tying in with ‘Deserted’ and keeps the momentum going…

‘Synchronicity of Life and Decay’ sees some of the most ambient instrumentation, including a slick tuneful guitar solo,  in what is their shortest song, showing they can deliver a quick hard blow. While ‘Earthless’ soars on, with the band in their element with fast paced melodies, going between slower calm parts and then effortlessly going full swing again. This is another stand out track for me.

Saving their title track for last, ‘Like Crows For The Earth’ truly encompasses all their best characteristic sounds, being a perfect and solid representation of their album and sound, making it a fine choice to end on.

Considering this is rooted in doom and death, this is a joy to listen to, as it is surprisingly diverse, melodic and positive for this genre. ‘Like Crows For The Earth’ highlights that Tethra aren’t afraid to think outside of the box, and for their efforts they should be more widely accepted, as this is more accessible than most doom/death metal offerings, giving it the edge. Most of the songs are around six or seven minutes long, but all very well crafted and consistent throughout, progressing naturally along the way. The use of instrumentals interspersed shows their musicianship further, and aids their more sonic and consuming sound, which is layered nicely to balance it out, and gives them their unique sound. If you are a fan of gothic doom/death metal this is a must, but even if you aren’t you may be in for a nice unexpected treat!

Score: 4/5

INTERVIEW: Steve ‘N’ Seagulls (Finland)

INTERVIEW: Steve ‘N’ Seagulls (Finland)                                                                                             by Carina Lawrence

So I had the pleasure of interviewing Wild Till Hiltunen (plays accordion, kantele, mandolin, keys, flute) from Finnish band Steve ‘n’ Seagulls, who rose to fame in 2014, through their popular bluegrass cover versions of well-known rock and metal songs they posted on Youtube. Their most popular video of AC/DCs ‘Thunderstruck’ has received over 35 million views. I caught up with him whilst they are on their most ambitious ‘It’s A Long Way To The Top’ UK tour about to play in Exeter (30th March) to find out about how the tour is going so far, about their origins as a band, their successes so far, as well as their future plans…

So you are currently on your ‘It’s A Long Way To The Top’ UK tour, how is it going so far?

It’s been very good. We have enjoyed a lot…I think it’s our fourth time in the UK, so there’s a couple of places we have been to before, so yeah it’s been good.

What has the crowd reactions been like this time around, as you are playing in parts of the UK you have never ventured before?

I think it’s more about the night…we played on Monday night (March 27th 2017) in Stoke-On-Trent and the audience seemed to be very quiet for some songs. But still it’s always about the night, weekends are more crazy. It’s not really about the location.

How does it compare so far with your previous experiences in the UK?

It’s been better this time somehow I don’t know why. Last time I had like lasagne with beans and potatoes, haven’t tried that (laughs) weird combination, but in general it’s like we have got used to touring with the van, so we got the routine, no surprises but not in a bad way. It’s always fun to see more people and see that things are going well and we have got a good label here as well, Spinefarm (records) and we just played at their studio yesterday (29th March 2017) we recorded three songs for the radio and some promotion like now…it’s been good and developing nicely. We have just been running outside here in Exeter and enjoying the beautiful capital.

Can you tell us a bit about the formation of the band?

We started like five maybe six years ago in Jyväskylä, Finland where we all used to study there and we were meant to a country tour for our booking agents and somehow it just felt like it’s want we wanted to do and it started developing, and at some point we changed our singer to Remmel with us now and maybe it’s that time we started to go towards bluegrass, we had like a banjo, mandolin and stuff like that, so it’s been changing a lot from the beginning and I’m not sure where we are going…we are actually talking about the third album already and planning it and trying to find good songs and writing new materials, so let’s see what happens. Pretty excited about that

What inspired you to learn so many instruments and what was this process like?

Just because it’s fun to just try a new instrument even if you don’t know how to play them, because you spend hours and hours with the instrument and maybe get something out of it, it’s just a lot of fun to mix those in our music. The elements like the banjo and double bass and accordion, then like take something out of the books. Last album we had like Finnish traditional instruments like the kantele (five string) and a playing saw, which is basically a saw you used for cutting trees and you play that with the bow, like you play violin or cello, very creepy sound. Also the balalaika was one of the tricky ones.

stevnsgs2

Why is the band named after actor Steven Seagal? How did this come about?

Yeah it’s sort of a pun, but we like his movies though. That was actually my girlfriend who came up with that idea. We had like a bunch of good names but that just sounded like us. People keep asking who is Steve? There is no Steve in our band, it could be misleading but it just suits us.

Did you ever think when you first formed in 2011 that you would go on to become Youtube sensations?

The first video we did was just to give some material for our booking agent and also we noticed that on Youtube there was sort of a trend going round with live videos, people did like real live videos outside and outdoors where you can hear like background noise like traffic. We kind of took that guide line to take one camera and one mic in one take…so we put it on Youtube and suddenly something happened with the metal online magazines, they just started writing about us and it spread out, that was with ‘The Trooper’ by Iron Maiden that video and after that we did ‘Thunderstruck’ (AC/DC) and we expected it would spread quite well, but five million views in a couple of weeks was way more than we expected. We were really like what the hell?! After that like two months after the ‘Thunderstruck’ release we got a recording label contract and everything and then it’s been like we have been touring mostly abroad, so we have been very happy with the Youtube videos.
What has it been like to achieve such success with mass video viewings, two acclaimed albums under your belt and being able to tour around the world?

Now it seems like we are after a break (laughs) and we are going to have a break in May and then we will start doing the festivals in June, July and August in Europe mostly, but it’s exciting travelling all over the country. I think we did maybe twenty five countries last year, so a lot of airports, a lot of packing stuff, not complaining! May is also time to go towards the third album and planning that, so we are not entirely having a vacation.

What made you decide as a band to play bluegrass cover versions of some of the biggest rock and metal songs going?

We started with more like spaghetti western like movie music influenced…I don’t know we just tried different instruments, like I used to play guitar and had been for many years and at some point I just tried banjo, and it kind of sounded funny and good. But there was no particular plan, it just happened, we don’t plan that much.

What is your favourite song you have covered so far and why?

That is tough. I think from the last album we did Gary Moore’s ‘Over The Hills And Far Away’ that had a kind of black metal vibe, I liked that. We don’t play that a lot live for some reason, I don’t know if it’s to do with the lyrics but still it’s so fun to play.

How do you decide what songs you are going to cover?

For the third album we have a bunch of stuff. We make a list and come up with the idea of arrangement or some melody that could be played with accordion or banjo and how would it sound. So we make a list and then we sit down and start playing and kind of stay open minded and abandon songs that aren’t good enough to make it on the record…we sit all together and decide what to keep.

Have you started to work on any new material yet? If so, can you give us any insights into this?

I think it’s very early to say…to reveal anything but I would say we are looking forward to get some new originals, but it’s depending on our producer and everything how it comes out. There will be some heavy metal classics, but we can also try something else…what it is I don’t know (laughs).

What else do Steve ‘N’ Seagulls have planned for the rest of 2017?

We just finished our third US tour in February and we are waiting for the numbers and everything and would like to go back in September after the festivals, but that is not set yet. What is sure, is that we are going to Europe in October, November and December, so a lot of touring and rehearsals for the next album, so it’s going to be a very busy year.
