LIVE REVIEW: Children Of Bodom – Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London – 12th March 2017

LIVE REPORT: Children Of Bodom – Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London – 12th March 2017                                                                                                                                                              by Carina Lawrence

Finnish Melodic metallers, Children Of Bodom party hard for their two decade milestone!
Children Of Bodom have impressively been delivering their mixed metal genre, comprised of elements of extreme, power, symphonic and neoclassical for twenty years now and are one of Finland’s finest and bestselling metal artists for their efforts. The band decided to celebrate their hefty two decade reign with the fans on their ‘Down & Dirty’ tour…
It is a pretty packed venue for a Sunday night in London’s 02 Shepherd’s Bush Empire which is a well-known music venue, with a beautiful interior and the perfect place to host the bands night of glory and merry atmosphere…
They fittingly take us back to the very beginning opening with a song from their debut 1998 album ‘Something Wild’ launching straight into chaos with ‘Deadnight Warrior’ which immediately gets the crowd going wild, especially following their impatience before the band came out, chanting ‘Bodom!’ to summon them. Sticking with their debut they churn out ‘In The Shadows’ after this. They treat us to many songs from their first offering later in to the set also with, ‘Red Light In My Eyes,Pt 2’, ‘Lake Bodom’, and also revisit it in the encore with ‘The Nail’.

There isn’t much talking from lead guitarist/vocalist, Alex Laiho, as he appears so eager to let loose and play, to simply revel playing endless skilled guitar solo with slick ease, with no complaints from the crowds. When he does briefly talk he is filled with gratitude for the crowd participation and carnage unfolding.
The played a range of brilliant songs spanning their twenty year career as you would expect, including the ever popular ‘Needled 24/7’, ‘Downfall’, ‘Everytime I Die’, ‘Hate Me’. There was however a lack of songs taken from some of their latest albums, such as their current and ninth album with 2015’s ‘I Worship Chaos’ and the previous album, ‘Halo Of Blood’, but seeing as they have nine albums, they can’t play them all, and every single song they plucked out with furious speed went down a storm anyway – these dedicated and mad fans were hungry for any Bodom songs!
Other songs they graced us with came largely from their 2000 album, ‘Follow The Reaper’ with classic likes ‘Bodom After Midnight’ and ‘Children Of Decadence’. The end this triumphant show fittingly they go out playing ‘Towards Dead End’.

For a Sunday night this was mental in terms of the turn out and the energy. The band seemed very conscious and considerate of fans handing out lots of water to the people at the front of the hectic and sweaty pits! There was a lot of crowd surfing, or at least many attempts of this before security stopped them in their glorious plight, expressing their gratitude for the band, along with plenty of head banging, some great circle pits and just general antics – even in the seated areas some fans struggled to stay to their seats, frantically getting up to bounce around and go nuts, showing that all fans were fully engaged and hanging on to every note. They absolutely slayed with all the guitar and keyboard solos especially, that are amazing to witness, with the crowd appreciating each and every one, which there is certainly no shortage off! This was an epic night which left everyone buzzing through their high intensity, energetic and unforgettable performance!

Score: 5/5

REVIEW: Ephemerald – ‘I Bear Fire’ (single)

Ephemerald – ‘I Bear Fire’ Single Review

by Carina Lawrence / Dark Art Conspiracy

Finnish metal band, Ephemerald although fairly new to the scene, having formed in 2016 are no strangers to the industry as collectively the members have a wealth of experience and touring. The members consist of by Joni Snoro (ex-Frosttide), Lauri Myllylä (ex-Frosttide), Vesa Salovaara (Vorna) and Juho Suomi (Apocryfal & Prayed and Betrayed). They are wasting no time building their reputation as they have recently signed a deal with Rockshots Records to release their debut single ‘I Bear Fire’. So what can we expect from this new band?!…

‘I Bear Fire’ quickly asserts its massive presence, aided by dark and eerie sounds. The fierce growled vocals amongst the in depth instrumentation is very effective, with the big orchestrations enhancing the melodies and ambience. The contrasting memorable clean vocals, paired with aggressive vocals is well placed and makes quite an impact. This is an unstoppable mighty force; what a way to showcase their sound with this huge debut single!

Fortunately the band are currently working on their full length album release, which is tentatively set for 2018. Until then enjoy ‘I Bear Fire’!

REVIEW: Fall Of Carthage – The Longed-For Reckoning

Fall Of Carthage – The Longed-For Reckoning

Review by Carina Lawrence / Dark Art Conspiracy

This German thrash trio came together in 2014 to push boundaries and create something unique and genre defying. And in a short space of time have proven that this is not just a side project of Arkadius Antonik (SuidAkrA, Realms Of Odoric) and Martin Buchwalter (Perzonal War), who brought Sascha Aßbach on vocals, after a long absence from the music scene. They released their debut album ‘Behold’ in 2015 and now in 2017 they want to take their sound even further with their sophomore album, ‘The Longed For Reckoning’. Dark Art Conspiracy were proud to premiere the new album before the release…

fall-of-carthage-2017-promo-IMG_8551.JPG

Opening track and first single ‘Fast Forward’ breaks us in with a delicate, beautiful and eerie intro before the full darkness is unleashed and packs a hefty punch, with hints of other popular hard rock/metal bands such as Five Finger Death Punch coming through. The crashing drums and rapid chunky riffs drive the song with fierce and powerful vocals from Sascha Aßbach which fit in perfect harmony with the heavy backdrop of carnage…
Sick Intentions’ is a relentless slab of heaviness with wicked guitar riffs and ferocious and skilled drumming giving it a very belligerent sound. The chorus is reigned in for effect, but makes a massive impact which is very memorable. Their delivery has industrial and raw elements, offering great variety in and within each song. ‘Swept To The Edge’ is an infectiously catchy head banging anthem which possesses such authority and all-consuming presence, this see’s the band at their best.
They offer some breathing space amongst the brutality and mix things up by switching to a serene yet slightly unnerving sound with the likes of ‘Complete’ being reassuring and almost therapeutic, with lines such as “Breathe In, Breathe Out” before the full instruments kick in for high impact – this is cleverly structured and delivered. The band have many surprises up their sleeve…
The interestingly titled, “Whodini Peckawood” goes back to the rap metal vibes seen earlier and ties in with ‘Complete’ offering a more stripped back approach. This is a bad ass rap with limited vocals largely consisting off “Whodini motherfucker, peckawood motherfucker” conveyed in an unhinged manner, before trailing off into what sounds like a ritualistic tribe chant…well that was unexpected…
They truly flourish when they are rampaging on the heavier side with must hear songs, ‘Paint In White’ and ‘Bury The Crisis’ which features anthemic gang vocals that keep adrenaline running high.
Final track, ‘Black December’ embraces the best parts of the band’s sound, and therefore makes a forceful lasting impression once more.
Sascha Aßbach is an interesting and impressive vocalist, managing to combine elements of many legendary metal front-men such as Corey Tayler, Robb Flynn and even a touch of Phil Anselmo, this is a compliment, however on the other hand, it makes it slightly harder to define the bands signature sound with many comparisons flying about, but on the whole they do maintain their ground and signature flair.
This second release offers many different sounds, making it largely experimental, ranging from industrial vibes to rap and even a glimpse of grunge thrown in for good measure. It should appeal too many, however it may leave some metal heads a little bemused, but generally it provides something for everyone, and shows the band aren’t afraid to digress and explore other territories, rather than just a full blown thrash assault. Whatever direction they do, whether it be a rap medley or an all hell breaks loose metal anthem, they are giving it their all and should be highly praised for this.

REVIEW: Courtesans – Better Safe Than Sober EP!

Courtesans – ‘Better Safe Than Sober’ EP review

Review by Carina Lawrence / Dark Art Conspiracy

Courtesans are a four piece doom pop act hailing from London, UK. Their unique sound embraces many styles and subtleties to capture the best elements of each including grunge, alternative rock and electronic, which results in their genre bending and innovative sound. Following the release of their widely received debut album, ‘1917’ and their successful Pledge Music campaign in 2016, they aren’t holding back in any way and are ready to solidify their stamp in the scene further with their highly anticipated new E.P ‘Better Safe Than Sober’ out March 31st.

courtesans_ep_cover
The EP kicks off with new video single, ‘Mesmerise’ which immediately masks us in an dark enthralling ambience, aided by the effects and isolated vocals, with resonant instruments to give extra oomph, and when it peaks at the crescendo you truly are taken under there mesmerising allure. The end is particularly powerful and defiant with more angsty vocals, leaving you hooked and ready for more…
‘Feel The Same’ keeps us guessing with a rap style intro, before a sweet melodic alternative pop chorus comes in, going between the transition between the two genres, which is excellently constructed and is highly effective. The talking sections get more emotive and bleak as it progresses with the instruments helping to reflect the tone. This is cleverly portraying a dark meets light sound.
‘John Doe’ sounds eerie and desolate, making an atmospheric start, with soft pleasant stripped back vocals to accompany. Again the beats and melodies grow effortlessly and seamlessly along. It possesses a strong presence that is soaring and all consuming, and the same can be said of all the tracks featured on the EP, making it easy to get lost in the diverse sounds.
‘Knowhere’ is instantly heavier sounding from the off, portraying their doom rock influences more so with catchy dark riffs all wrapped in a dance trance vibe, with great sonic sounds throughout.
Last song, ‘The Tide’ goes back to their trip-hop sound which comes off as vulnerable and helps add extra depth and complexity to their invigorating style. The structure and use of sounds is intelligible and immense, flowing like a calm ocean current, leading up to a full blown tidal wave. This is a very appropriate way to describe their immersive sound also.
This E.P toys with your musical expectations and senses in the greatest sense, defying what you know and creating something different and exciting. It is irresistibly dark and captivating and leaves you thirsty for more.
Score: 5/5

The sophomore album sees the band reach new heights, truly honing in on their already distinct sound, with a bigger focus on progressive depth and darker sounds…

Opening track, ‘The Incredible Machine’ kicks into action furiously with rich melodic vocals from vocalist, John Knight to accompany the intricate guitars and changeable backdrop. The intelligible transitions quickly show their talent and craftsmanship and prove they run a tight ship, with all the rights cogs turning in unison, coming together to amass to six minutes of epicness. Luckily they grip you and give you many ‘reasons’ to keep listening…

‘White Circles’ has a more serene atmospheric approach in contrast initially, helping to show the diversity and range of vocals and sounds they can portray, before they go fully charged and up the angst with aggressive vocals and menacing guitar riffs; The guitars particularly shine here, with an impressive solo, although each member gets their moment to revel, and as a collective unit they are unstoppable rampaging on…

‘Human Inhuman’ features some interesting rhythms and time signatures which make this stand out, with sweet melodies and vocal lines that soar and drive it. It contains some impressive instrumental sections that will draw in fans of bands like Dream Theater, as you get a feel for the bands many musical influences coming through. ‘Conscience’ opens on a blazing harmonic guitar intro that is bound to impress, with guitarists Ian Knight and Jack Murton in their element, and again showing as throughout their technical abilities.

The first single and closing song ‘Esc Ctrl’ is a perfect introduction and representation of the band, as it immediately asserts their unique progressive sound. This is flawless with slick guitars, brilliant production and demanding powerful vocals. You can’t escape from their huge consuming sound, once you hear it you are hooked! They leave you hanging and wanting more as we reach the end.

“Justify & Reason” displays exquisite textured and highly melodic metal that still packs a deadly bite. Each song is expertly crafted and progresses effortlessly in an epic manner, aided by the sheer length of all the songs, as well as the rich flair of sounds and technical showmanship exhibited throughout, in every element. The bands already signature sound stands strong and it will surely assert itself in the metal scene. There is simply no ‘justified reason’ not to listen and admire this impressive collection of songs.
