Canadian atmospheric post-metal project ABANDONED PALACE have just released their new single “Shades of Autumn” for free download or pay-what-you-want via their Bandcamp site at the following link: https://abandonedpalace.bandcamp.com/track/shades-of-autumn
It’s been 2 years since the release of their self titled debut EP and mastermind Von Warugi (AKA Chris Warunki, drummer of prog metal band OmnisighT) says “This is just something to bridge the gap between our debut EP and the full length album to follow, likely late 2017.”
As for the alter-ego he states “It’s just a way to bring out my dark side musically and distinguish myself as a composer/producer. The drums really take a back seat to everything else going on within the songs; in fact I’m always writing the drum parts dead last, whereas in OmnisighT, the drums are my primary role and focus.”
ABANDONED PALACE was formed in 2013 (debut EP released in 2015) and involves Von Warugi handling all writing, instruments and production – you could almost call it a “solo project” were it not for the lead vocals and lyrics where he’s joined by his faithful collaborator, known only as “The Void”; whose contributions on “Shades of Autumn” range dynamically from whispers to black metal and death metal style vocals.
Lyrically “It’s a reflection on inevitability. Fear of what we all must face can be crippling, but there is much to appreciate along the way, just like the colours of fall. As time goes by, it can get easier to lose sight of that until it’s too late…” says The Void.
Musically, ABANDONED PALACE weave a somber spell of black, folk, doom, gothic and atmospheric metal to create an intoxicating concoction that would likely appeal to fans of Agalloch, Katatonia, Swallow The Sun and Coldworld.
“Spüken is the musical equivalent of a magician removing his own entrails. The guts just keep coming, like handkerchiefs from a sleeve, and its painful, colourful and cathartic all at once, in the same way that vomiting after hours of nausea is such a relief. The musical ideas that came together in this project span many years and come from many influences. Hearing them all together is a trip. There were a lot of hard times in the years while this record was being written and most, if not all of these songs are tied together by the search for something greater than oneself. Empowerment by going through ones pain, all this is woven into an album that is another spastic stylistic roller coaster not unlike our previous albums, but with smoother blending. From song to song there is a lot of variance, but within songs we have managed to take contrasting genres and combine them in more nuanced ways, with less hard cuts. This album is colourful, and the palette is dark.”

Based in Valemount, BC near Jasper National Park with the beautiful backdrop of the Canadian Rockies, there stands an outdoor festival that just doesn’t celebrate Heavy Metal, but embraces the power of women in metal.
Formed in 2016, METALOCALYPSTICK FEST was created to present a unique experience within the Western Canadian metal community, a gathering of similar views, aspirations and musical taste. (similar to former mainstream music festival Lilith Fair.)
Founded by Kaija Kinney of Vancouver’s Anarcheon after researching a lack of female based metal festivals to apply her band to, Kinney took matters into in her own and decided to produce the event.
Kinney comments:
“This festival means the celebration of both sexes coming together and creating something amazing. People like to say women in metal aren’t a big deal anymore and that we are all the same. I feel that is untrue, this is still a male dominated world and woman are still looked as lesser. I want to showcase all these bad ass ladies and celebrate the differences of men and woman rather than pretend we are all equal. Truth is we are different why can’t we celebrate that?”
In addition to the festival celebrating women in metal, the METALOCALYPSTICK FEST gives back to the community by being a non-profit organization dedicated to raise funds and donating 100% of proceeds to local charities Girls Rock Camp, Vancouver Rape Relief and Women’s Shelter, Earth Protectors plus an audience picked foundation.
The 1st annual Metalocalypstick hosted female influenced metal bands from across Canada and the world such as Brazil’s Nervosa (Napalm Records), Egypt’s Massive Scar Era, Hollywood’s The Maension, Valfreya, Scythia, Mortillery (Napalm Records), Van Halst, Dead Asylum, Juliet Ruin, Violent Betty, Omega Crom, Körperlose Stimme, Elysium Echoes, Solborn, Monarch Sky, Forsaken Rite, Anarcheon, and Suspended.
Preparing for their 2nd annual year, the outdoor festival for women in metal is proud to announce their first batch of bands added to the line up with Tessitura, Körperlose Stimme, Meteor Tree, Scythia, Hedks, Forsaken Rite and Remnants.
METALOCALYPSTICK presented by Gigfly.ca is being held during Canada Day weekend on July 1st and 2nd in Valemount, BC. For tickets and more info, please visit the following links:
