REVIEW: THE RASMUS “RISE”

First listen:

The intro guitars remind a bit of old HIM distortion, but then silence comes and Lauri’s voices is accompanied but strings…. and aside from being reminiscent of all the collaborations with Apocalyptica, my mind went straight to one of my all time favorite songs of theirs dating back to the album Into, “Last Waltz”. But as the song flows on, there are also heavy vibes from their album Black Roses and those words, “black roses” are even entwined in the lyrics. The song is a bit fragmented in my opinion, stops and starts, heavy distorted guitars that fall off abruptly into the delicate gothic victorian strings. I like all the elements and am really happy to hear the whole band again (after the last few albums that seemed to drag Lauri’s solo electronic pop album out and out). That dark gothy vibe that drew many of us in and held fast through at least three albums (not to mention the similarity of the music video to the US verison of In The Shadows video…. the one that personally started me on this journey)… but also this newish raw, heavy, almost metal sound that you can hear in fits and start (also here and therein their Eurovision single “Jezebel”). I feel like the band has new life blown into them, and I am very eager to see what else is coming!

Inklings – Ambush (Single Review)

by Carina Lawrence / Dark Art Conspiracy

Inklings is the new musical venture of Kier Kemp following his departure from the popular alt-rock band Fearless Vampire Killers.

The new single ‘Ambush’ bravely confronts about someone in an abusive relationship that he knew and features honest lyrics with lines like “I’ve had enough. I’m getting out. Cause it’s getting kind of rough”. It is delivered in an ambient manner with heavy vibrant synths and pleasant varied vocals. Although the nature of the lyrics is harsh and bleak the song itself is largely upbeat but still highlights the point powerfully and in a memorable burst of melodies. This is some exciting indie rock that you need to hear.

REVIEW: Vermilia – “Vedestä Vieraantunut” (Single)

Review by Carina Lawrence / Dark Art Conspiracy

Vermilia is a female artist from Finland who has just unveiled her first self-released single “Vedestä Vieraantunut”. She has created a unique Scandinavian pagan metal sound with impressive and pleasant vocal harmonies to create a nice balance of dark and light.

The song features incredibly beautiful melodic vocals sung in her native Finnish language, which are enthralling and with fierce growls, in contrast, it gives it a great mix of metal and harmony. It possesses a hard groove through the instrumentation and is highly atmospheric, intriguing and delightfully dark. This is captivating and soaring, leaving you very hungry to hear more depthful pagan inspired sounds, so hopefully, a debut offering is on the way soon.

SCORE: 5/5

“Vedestä Vieraantunut” was officially released on November 13th as a self-released single and is available for sale/streaming through all major platforms.

REVIEW: Streams – Streams (single)

REVIEW: Streams – Streams (single) by                                                                                  Carina Lawrence / Dark Art Conspiracy

Epic death metallers Streams are a brutal multi-talented duo from Finland. They have just unleashed their first self-titled single, which opens dramatically with a horror film vibe effect, instantly putting you on edge, before dark fast guitars come in, greeted by fierce growled vocals, which fire speedily throughout.  This is a blistering death metal offering, which is highly melodic and ends as it started, coming full circle and hitting you hard with every last beat.

This is a brilliant debut song and leaves you exhausted, but hungry for more extreme sounds from Streams, who in just one strike prove they are a band to keep an eye.

Score: 4/5

MEMBERS:
ATLAS – vocals, bass, guitar
TURBONUKLEAR – vocals, keys, drums
