REVIEW: ARCH ENEMY – “Deceivers”

by Carina Lawrence / Dark Art Conspiracy

Swedish melodic death metal masters return ever triumphant with their eleventh album ‘Deceivers’, which marks some of their finest, most ambitious and explosive material to date.

The colossal opener ‘Handshake With Hell’ asserts Alissa White-Gluz’s versatile capabilities displaying incredible clean melodic vocals paired with her fierce ones, making for a crushing combination, and the excellent fiery rapid guitar work makes it unyielding. An exhilarating and impressive one to kick off with.

The title track ‘Deceiver, Deceiver’ follows in all its brilliant fury, ready to smash everything in its path. It charges along with great precision with the instruments and Alissa’s harsh vocals in perfect harmony that will get you moving along in no time.

The menacing ‘In The Eye Of The Storm’ keeps the momentum going in this striking brutal, yet uplifting sounding offering. The tuneful and vibrant ‘The Watcher’ adds more diversity and is extremely enjoyable and glorious with grand jaunty guitar sections and a slick nimble solo.

‘Poisoned Arrow’ opens with a sorrowful dramatic intro and progresses on to be stylish and inventive. ‘Sunset Over The Empire’ possesses the signature roots of Arch Enemy and structure and is unstoppable in its heft and gloomy atmosphere.

‘House Of Mirrors’ is hellishly catchy and will have you headbanging in no time, while the vast ‘Spreading Black Wings’ hits hard and soars with its boundless ambience. Offering an atmospheric breather is the ‘Mourning Star’ instrumental.

‘One Last Time’ rampages with glorious power and precision, with Michael Amott firing out some wonderful, vibrant hooks which carry the track to new heights and complement Alissa’s brutal vocals in brilliant contrast.

The final track, the suspenseful atmospheric ‘Exiled From Earth’ resonates wonderfully throughout and ends on a victorious and beaming note.

‘Deceivers’ is their most daring and creative release yet, throughout its eleven tracks. It is a powerful release that features classic Arch Enemy sounds you would expect but also goes beyond this. Such talent is brimming in each song, and every track is grand in demeanour and offers a thrilling experience which, given how long Arch Enemy has been on the scene, is even more impressive. However, they have always been a consistently solid band that always delivers. The album is an unstoppable force with robust, brutal anthemic metal offerings. It is an extremely gratifying listen, with energy and creativity levels running high with their more in-your-face glaring approach.

‘Deceivers’ is released 12th August 2022 via Century Media Records.
