UK’s biggest rock/metal festival is fast approaching so we take a look at just some (there are too many to list) of our highlights of this awesome music weekend that is not to be missed on the 8-10th June….
The first most notable highlight, of course, has to be the three headliners:
Avenged Sevenfold To Headline The First Day
Avenged Sevenfold are going to headline the opening day at Download Festival once again! They first headlined back in 2014 and now marks their mighty return to the notorious spot. Since their formation nearly two decades ago they have cemented themselves as a unique hard rock/metal act with their well-known and distinct vocals from M. Shadows and glorious guitar harmonies from Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance. They have an impressive back catalogue to choose from when selecting their setlist, but it is bound to include some of their most recent tracks from their latest album ‘The Stage’ such as the title track and ‘God Damn’ along with older hits like ‘Bat Country’, ‘Afterlife’, ‘Hail To The King’, ‘Nightmare’ and more. This tour and festival run for the band is also looking to be one of their best and most varied sets and the band have promised that it will be a big and different send-off, where they give it all they have got before they vanish for a while to work on their next record. So this is one headline set you don’t want to miss, which is likely to be crazy and thrilling with a mixed array of songs to please the masses.
Guns N’ Roses Return To Headline Download Festival For The First Time In 12 Years
Guns N’ Roses are quite simply classic rock royalty and have made their mark on the genre since their formation in 1985. It has been an incredible 12 years since they last headlined at the festival which is very exciting in its self. In 2016, the rock world rejoiced as some of the original and impressive line-up reunited together once again, with Axl Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan. This set will be their first UK Festival appearance of the classic line up featuring the imitable Axl Rose, guitar legend Slash and original bassist Duff McKagan, plus Dizzy Reed, Richard Fortus, Frank Ferrer and Melissa Reese.
The ongoing proceeding tour with the reunited act, titled ‘Not In This Lifetime’ was massively successful and one of the biggest and highest grossing tours of all time. Earlier this month (May 2018) they released their first single in nearly a decade, the previously unreleased, ‘Shadow Of Your Love’ which has landed them back in the mainstream rock charts. It was released as part of the promotion of the deluxe edition of ‘Appetite For Destruction’ which is set for release on June 29th, which includes a number of other previously unreleased tracks. “Shadow” is the band’s first radio single featuring its original lineup since “Patience,” which peaked at No. 7 in March 1989.
Now is a rare and perfect time to see them back with some of their original members, and with the deluxe release of their iconic debut album they are most definitely going to be filling their headline set with their classic well-loved hits from their debut such as ‘Welcome To The Jungle’, ‘Paradise City’ and ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’. Not to mention all their other worldwide known songs like ‘November Rain’, their cover of ‘Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door’ and much more. I don’t think there is a person in the world who doesn’t know who this band are and everyone will want to be there to witness this historic set at Download Festival.
Ozzy Osbourne Closes Festival With A Farewell
The mighty and iconic rockstar that is Ozzy Osbourne who is also dubbed as ‘the Godfather of heavy metal’ is best known for being the lead vocalist of the legendary Black Sabbath who disbanded last year in 2017. Ozzy has impressively made eleven solo albums during his career alongside Black Sabbath also. This headline set at Download actually marks his first and last ever solo set, as this appearance is part of his world farewell tour. So what a way to end the festival with what will possibly one of the last sets Ozzy will do. It will be very a special and powerful close to this monstrous three-day rock event, which again will be rather historic for the scene, making for another reason why this is a must-see.
Shocking Goth Rockers Marilyn Manson Return To Download
Goth rock veterans Marilyn Manson played the first ever Download Festival back in 2003 and many since then also but this year they have the great second headliner slot before Ozzy Osbourne on the final day of the festival. Their latest tenth album ‘Heaven Upside Down’ was released last year and was well received so hopefully we will be hearing some of the new songs from this like, ‘We Know Where You Fucking Live’, ‘Kill4Me, and ‘Tattooed In Reverse’. Of course having a longer set they will have plenty of time throw in some classic and well-known tracks like ‘Beautiful People’, ‘Sweet Dreams’, ‘Tainted Love’, ‘Personal Jesus’ and more if we are lucky. The band and Marilyn Manson (Brian Warner) are known for their shocking and controversial behaviour both on and off stage, so be sure to witness their crazy and unpredictable antics.
Alexisonfire Make Return To The UK After Long Break
Canadian post-hardcore act Alexisonfire initially split up back in 2011 but luckily they decided to reunite in 2015 following a reunion tour, so they are finally making their highly anticipated return to perform in the UK after a very long time! Their first and only ever Download appearance before this was in 2006 so this is a rare and well-earned treat. Their latest album was back in 2009 titled ‘Old Crows/Young Cardinals’ and although they don’t appear to be working on any new material just yet, it means that we have more chances of hearing all the best tracks like ‘This Could Be Anywhere In The World’, ‘Boiled Frogs’. ‘Young Cardinals’, ‘Accidents’ and more, which will go down a storm live with their anthemic and big singalongs.
Jonathan Davis Will Play An Exclusive UK Set At Download
Jonathan Davis is best known as the lead vocalist of nu metal band Korn but now he is unleashing his debut solo album titled ‘Black Labyrinth’ on May 25th. The two singles released ‘What It Is’ and ‘Everyone’ have been well received and give us a taste of what is to come and luckily for all those attending the festival, this will be the first time he will be playing some of the new songs from the album in the UK. Don’t miss this exclusive set on the 8th June on the second stage!
Cellar Darling Featuring Ex-Eluveitie Members Make Download Debut
New folk-rock act Cellar Darling formed following the split of Switzerland’s most successful folk metal act Eluveitie in 2016. The trio consisting of Anna Murphy (vocals, hurdy-gurdy), Merlin Sutter (drums) and Ivo Henzi (guitars & bass) were already well-established musicians and used to touring the world so their new sound and band came very naturally and the results of their debut album ‘This Is The Sound’ in 2017 demonstrate this. They still possess an element of folk in their music but it is also something unique and refreshing, so for those who are not familiar with the band, it would be a real shame to miss them at their debut appearance to charm the crowds on the Sunday with their pleasant mysterious rock.
Parkway Drive Headline Zippo Encore Stage Fresh Off New Album Release
Australian metalcore act Parkway Drive will headline the second stage for the first time on the Saturday at their fourth appearance at the festival. Their set is sure to be brimming with new material fresh of the release of their sixth album ‘Reverence’ which was released May 4th and has already be critically well received, especially with singles such the latest ‘Prey’, ‘Wishing Well’ and ‘Void’, all of which will go down well live.
Rise Against Headline The Second Stage On Final Day
Melodic hardcore punk rockers Rise Against will captivate crowds during their headline set on the second stage on Sunday, with their anthemic singalongs and striking flawless sets, they are not to be missed live. Their latest 2017 album ‘Wolves’ featured their signature powerful call to arms politically driven songs such as ‘Violence’. Seeing as they are headlining hopefully they will have time to churn out all their massive hits like ‘Saviour’, ‘Prayer Of The Refugee’, ‘Hero Of War’ and ‘Satellite’.
Melodic Metalcore Titans Bury Tomorrow Play On The Second Stage With New Album On The Way
Bury Tomorrow return to Download following their brutal and brilliant set in 2016. This time around we may be in for some new material, as their highly anticipated new album is on the way July 13th and what better time to play some new material and test the crowd’s reaction?! They are a band that always stands out with their impressive melodic heavy music, especially with two talented and contradictory singers Daniel Winter-Bates (screamed vocals) and Jason Cameron (clean vocals). Hopefully, they will also be playing some of their most loved songs such as ‘Earthbound’, ‘Lionheart’ and ‘Man On Fire’ also.
Bullet For My Valentine Return To The Mainstage After 5 Years Armed With New Material
These Welsh heavyweights have played Download quite a few times now in their career but it has been five year’s since their last graced the main stage so it marks a much-needed return and it will be an exciting one as they will be unleashing their sixth album ‘Gravity’ later in the month after Download, so it is very likely they may debut some other new songs to the eager festival crowd, along with their new single ‘Over It’. With a long set as second headliners we have a high chance of hearing all of their belters and fan favourites like ‘Tears Don’t Fall’, ‘Your Betrayal’, ‘All These Things I Hate (Revolve Around Me), ‘Waking The Demon’ and much more.
New Bands To Check Out On The Dogtooth Stage Including Death Blooms
On the upcoming Dogtooth stage, British metal act from Liverpool Death Blooms make their Download debut with their striking mix of nu-metal and hardcore combined – they make quite the impact, and their self-titled debut last year cemented them as ones to watch. This is just one of the many up and coming exciting new acts and rising stars of rock/metal to watch out for. It is always great to check out the smaller stages at festivals to discover some new music!
So there you go, these are just a handful of bands to check out as 2018’s line-up is rammed with brilliant bands. Enjoy festival goers!
