REVIEW: Pulchra Morte – ‘Ex Rosa Ceremonia’

REVIEW: Pulchra Morte – ‘Ex Rosa Ceremonia’ by Carina Lawrence / Dark Art Conspiracy

Death doom metallers Pulchra Morte is comprised of Adam Clemans (Skeletonwitch, Wolvhammer), John Porada (Wolvhammer, Abigail Williams), Jarrett Pritchard (Eulogy, Brutality), Clayton Gore (Eulogy, Harkonin), and Jeffrey Breden (Leagues Below) who formed in 2017 with the intention of bringing back the atmosphere and feeling to extreme music. Their new second full-length album ‘Ex Rosa Ceremonia’ truly embraces this sentiment.

The first song ‘The Serpent’s Choir’ kicks thing off in a magnificent and colossal way especially given that it features so many guest vocalists that form the collective that is known as The Serpent’s Choir which impressively comprises of many vocalists offering backing vocals. The choir features members from Immolation, 1349, Uada, Cloak, Mondo Generator, GWAR lending their hand to create a mighty chorus and add to the ambient and dark atmosphere which exudes throughout this song.

‘Fires Of Coil’ hits hard with its driving and intense riffs while “Knife of the Will” features a stand out solo and oozes melancholic grandeur and highlights their devilishly crafted melodic doom metal at its finest.

The menacing ‘In The Mourning Light’ is crushing and one of the most belligerent offerings, particularly highlighting their ability to hone in on the essence of sheer power death metal and the ferocity of black metal in one impressive creation.

The sombre ‘Prince Among Shadows’ graces us with more impressive guitar work and offering up a slight change in sound ‘The Archer _ The Noose’ is ethereal and stomping and grows in power as it crawls along with its brilliant eerie atmosphere and ambience.

‘To Suffer’ (The Way You Do) brings vehement melancholic doom riffs and fierce screams and truly captures the sound of bleakness, but as it progresses towards the end, it shows a hint of optimism through the powerful solo and resonant guitars. ‘Locust Humanity’ flows nicely on from this as it too has a most positive-sound through the ambience and tone whilst in contrast displaying very black metal vocals from  Adam Clemans.

The final song and title track ‘Ex Rosa Ceremonia’ is the longest offering and is soaring with gloom and ends on a creepy atmospheric note and encompasses their sound and the album wonderfully making it a grand and epic ending.

They triumphantly capture the bite of black metal, especially through the harsh vocals and the power of death/doom metal through their hefty atmospheric measured tempos. The album is raw and dark yet parades in melodic doom glory. ‘Ex Rosa Ceremonia’ will need to be replayed many a time to fully reap the rewards of their cunningly crafted extreme concoction.
